We had a great downwind trip yesterday. Anders, Patric and I put our surfskis on the roof rack and went to the fjord of Kungsbacka 25 km south of Goteborg in Sweden. We had a perfect 20 knot wind from south west. The fjord is short, total 10 km of paddling and 9 km downwind. But it was rewarding. So much happy paddling.

A while ago I wrote about the rumors about a new surfski from Epic. The rumor told me it was going to be a new updated V10 Sport named Epic V10 Supersport. When I spoke to Oscar Chalupsky at Tjärfestivalen two weeks ago I asked him about this. He confirmed that they are working on a new surfski but the name was not correct. The new surfski will be named Epic V10 Pro. He couldn’t state the exact specifications because they are doing the final tweaking at the moment but he told me that it will be as fast as a V10 and stable as a V10 Sport. The Epic V10 Pro will also have a slightly new deck to improve the catch compared to the V10 Sport. Oscar promised that Epic V10 Pro will be available in March, when it is time to go to Spain, for a spring camp. If all this are correct it will be an interesting option to the Swordfish.

Emma, Evy and Kris has also been paddling last week (Kris is kite surfing). They went to the fjord of Kungsbacka south of Goteborg. One of the best locations for downwind paddling in Sweden. Easy access and great conditions. Emma and Kris has recorded and edited a movie from the surfski trip. A really fun video. Enjoy!

The Swedish Surf Ski Championships, the Seamasters, became a real great downwind race. 40 participants from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Bulgaria and South Africa showed up at start. Oscar Chalupsky was the big favourite to win but he chose to start in a double surfski together with Boyan Zlatarev. They crossed the line a couple of minutes in front of the Swedish surfski master Tommy Karls who won the surfski single class.

The Seamasters is held between the small cities of Arkösund and Oxelösund, about 150 km south of Stockholm. It is a 25 km downwind race. The first 6 km was the wind from the right hand side and just with small windwaves. When we turned north and became more exposed to the sea we had a great downwind for almost 19 km. Tommy Karls had an average speed of 13.9 km/h. At the finish line the sea got really choppy and for some paddlers it was the most  demanding part of the race.

The navigation wasn’t that easy that it usually is. The visiblity was poor at times and the cranes in the harbour of Oxelösund that is the best to aim for didn’t show up until late.

All togheter it was great happy racing. It was a great downwind with a demanding finish. Erik from the race organizer Nomado solved the logistics of cars and skis in a very good way. They arranged transport of both paddlers and skies from Oxelösund to Arkösund. Nomado had also three safety boats patrolling the race course. Two paddlers DNF. The only problem was the navigation for the first 5 km that was sometimes hard in the archipelago. I can strongly recommend the Seamasters for anyone intrested in going to Sweden. Next year will proberbly the Seamasters be the final of the upcoming first Swedish national surfski Series.

bild 31 225x300 How to prepare before a surfski race by Dawid MockeThe Swedish Champs,The Seamasters 2012, is coming up next sunday. I did my first real surfski race in July, the Aterra Wave Challenge, but I wasn’t that satisfied with my result. The power in my stroke was really poor and I couldn’t go as hard as I had done during a training session a week earlier.  After the race I was confused. I have increased my training and results during the year but during the race I had no strength. I realised that my preparation the week before the race wasn’t that good. What did I do wrong and what is important in preparation before a big race? Dawid Mocke, one of the best surfski paddlers in the World, currently the leader of Ocean Paddler World Series, visited Sweden in May, during the Swedish Surfski Spring Camp. He gave us lot’s of good advices and tips about paddling. I contacted Dawid a week ago to get some advice about preparation before a big surfski race.  Dawid had some interesting thoughts and advice about race preparation the week before a race.

Here are the most important points from Dawid Mocke

  1. Don’t change ANYTHING – paddles, grip, seat pads, SKI…..!!!, rudders, juice, gels, any other nutritions etc etce tc. This is by far the biggest mistake most people make. To try and gain any kind of advantage in the race they think changing to something they heard is better/faster etc they will improve. But the chances of it going wrong are much greater! The rule – train like you race – RACE LIKE YOU TRAIN.
  2. Two nights before is most important to get a good nights sleep.
  3. For training do shorter sessions but at the same intensity; keep the muscles sharp. Don’t go and do a major session in the gym that’ll make you stiff.
  4. Eat normally, dont worry about carbo loading; your body does that anyway because you are training less but you will still eat the same.

OK, thats about it!

Good Luck in the Seamasters!

There is a Fenn Swordfish fever in Sweden at the moment. When is Epic about to respond? Oscar Chalupsky talked about an Epic V10 SuperSport last year in Sardinia. When will the Epic Supersport arrive to cool the fever down? During the last month I have had an survey about which brand of surfski do you paddle? The Survey is probably far from significant but may indicate the proportions of surfskis among the Swedish surfskiers. 60 people have answered the survey. It is close between the biggest brands. Fenn has 23% compared to Epic 22%. 15% do not have a surfski at all, yet! Carbonology Sports is growing in Sweden and has now a complete fleet from beginners to elite sufski models. Nordic Kayaks from Sweden has an updated version of Fusion and the new Rapido 2.0. Nelo and Seabird has also new models. It will be interesting if they can take more shares of the market.

Last weekend was the Swedish Surfski Summer Camp taken place in Varberg on the Swedish west coast. Varberg is one of the best locations for surfski paddling in Sweden. It was a camp for beginners and intermediate surfski paddlers. Leif Davidsson from Aterra organized the camp with assistance from Karolina Silfverberg and Evy Lantz. This year the wind was almost absent compared to the harsh weather from last years camp. The sea breeze helped out on the afternoon sessions.
