sean rice surfski 150x150 Jasper Mocke won in NorwayJasper Mocke won the Oceanpaddler World Series (OWS) race in Vesterålen, Norway. The race is held during week of the traditional Arctic Sea Kayak Race. Jasper showed  that he is a really good surfski paddler and won in front of Sean Rice (on the photo from last years race). Sean Rice has previously won the race two years in a row. Dane Sloss from Australia finished on the third place followed by Joep van Bakel from the Netherlands. To be able to race downwind the organizers used a big rescue vessel to transport the contestants 16 km offshore were they launched the surfskis at the start.

The race was mainly a battle between Jasper and Sean. Sean took the initiative and went to the lead right at the start. After 9 km Jasper found a line between some inserts that gave him a slightly shorter line, passing Sean. Sean tried but failed to catch up and finished in second place, 28 seconds after Jasper.

The next race in the OWS is held in San Francisco next weekend. There will probably be more contestants in the US Champs than in Norway …

Martin Nordstrand initiated a spontaneous surfski training week in Varberg and invited almost all he knew. Quite a few showed up for some real good surfski training. Tommy Karls, the number one in Sweden, showed up and stay for four days. Apelviken (Bay of Apples) in Varberg has always attracted surfers of all kinds. Right now, most kite surfers hanging there, but this week they were displaced by a bunch of crazy surfskipaddlers. The conditions were really good. I do not know how big the surf was but it was huge to me. On Monday and Tuesday we had an average wind of 11-14 m/s (21-27 knots).
