Jasper Mocke won the Oceanpaddler World Series (OWS) race in Vesterålen, Norway. The race is held during week of the traditional Arctic Sea Kayak Race. Jasper showed that he is a really good surfski paddler and won in front of Sean Rice (on the photo from last years race). Sean Rice has previously won the race two years in a row. Dane Sloss from Australia finished on the third place followed by Joep van Bakel from the Netherlands. To be able to race downwind the organizers used a big rescue vessel to transport the contestants 16 km offshore were they launched the surfskis at the start.
The race was mainly a battle between Jasper and Sean. Sean took the initiative and went to the lead right at the start. After 9 km Jasper found a line between some inserts that gave him a slightly shorter line, passing Sean. Sean tried but failed to catch up and finished in second place, 28 seconds after Jasper.
The next race in the OWS is held in San Francisco next weekend. There will probably be more contestants in the US Champs than in Norway …
